President Donald Trump made his first public appearance since Republicans experienced major losses in the midterm elections by highlighting the construction of a new White House ballroom and largely avoiding discussion of his party’s defeat. On Wednesday (November 4), President Trump gathered administration officials and construction workers at the site, where he emphasized the scale and luxury of the project, calling it “not only one of the biggest, but it’ll be the most beautiful ballroom, I think, anywhere in the world, and they’ve been trying to get it for 150 years."

The president did not immediately address the significant Republican setbacks that led to Democrats seizing both chambers of Congress. Instead, he spent more than fifteen minutes praising the ballroom project, referencing its gold finishes, marble floors, and advanced security features such as a “drone-proof roof” and “missile-resistant and drone-proof columns."

He signed a steel beam, adding the word “Love!” above his name, and remarked, “Everybody in the room signed it. All of the workers, not just the steelworkers, the plumbers, electricians, the painters—everybody signed it. And I’m going to be the last to sign it."

The ballroom, replacing the East Wing, is projected to cost between $400 million and $600 million, with at least half likely funded by taxpayers. The Department of Justice has described the facility as vital for national security, featuring heavy fortification, medical installations, and military-grade infrastructure.

While the new ballroom remains under construction, President Trump suggested that the “official opening” could happen in the near future.

As reporters asked about the Republican losses, President Trump responded, “If I were on the ballot, I would have won,” and attributed Republican setbacks to factors like the war in Iran increasing gas prices, stating, “the reason we lost is the war,” echoing comments from Vice President JD Vance. He also said, “We weren't able to transfer the love to candidates,” referencing enthusiasm at his rallies that did not carry over to other Republicans.
