Steve King Dared A Magazine To Release Recorded Audio Of Him. So They Did.

The day after Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King was reelected, The Weekly Standard assistant opinion editor Adam Rubenstein published an article referring to a conversation in which King had referred to immigrants as "dirt." King called the magazine liars, claiming that the conversation had never happened, and he dared the magazine to release their evidence.

"Just release the full tape," King said on Twitter.

So... they did.

The Weekly Standard released the two-minute audio clip in which you can hear King talking with supporters in the back of an Iowa restaurant on November 5. A little over half way through the tape, King jokes that he needed some "dirt from Mexico" to grow more jalapeno peppers.

"Well yeah, there's plenty of dirt. It's coming from the West Coast too. And a lot of other places, besides. This is the most dirt we've ever seen," he said.

After the tape was released, King and The Weekly Standard staff engaged in a public twitter fight.

The magazine's editor in chief, Stephen Hayes, later chimed in to tell King, "The Weekly Standard remains, proudly, a reporting-driven conservative journal of opinion... There are no lies, willful or otherwise... Our reporter wouldn't focus on your bigotry if you weren't a bigot."
