The University of Virginia disenrolled more than 200 students who failed to meet a deadline to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The school said that 238 students, including 49 who were enrolled in fall classes, would not be able to return to campus when classes resume on Monday (August 23).

University of Virginia spokesperson Brian Coy told the Virginian-Pilot that the students were sent "multiple reminders via email, text, phone calls, calls to parents that they were out of compliance." He admitted that "a good number" of the disenrolled students were not likely planning to return to the school for the fall semester.

Students will be reenrolled if they comply with the vaccination or request a religious or medical waiver by Wednesday (August 25). Those students will also be allowed to return in the spring semester if they have been vaccinated.

Schools officials said that 96% of students are fully vaccinated. They have granted 335 permanent vaccine waivers to students for religious or medical reasons. An additional 184 students were given a temporary waiver and will have to get vaccinated when they return to campus.

The school also said 96% of their teaching and research faculty are fully vaccinated.

When students return to campus, they will all be required to wear a mask while indoors, except while in dorms or private residences.
